You are pregnant. The time is crucial. You are not alone anymore. There is a life inside you. That’s why you should stay very careful about every little thing. You should be aware of what you wear, what you eat as well.

However, today I am here to discuss some foods that should be avoided during pregnancy. Those foods can harm you and your baby. Those foods can even cause miscarriage in the early stage of pregnancy.

For example, food with higher levels of mercury or Vitamin A can be harmful to the baby. Also, there are certain foods which can cause foodborne illness like Salmonella or Listeriotic poisoning. There are also some foods that are controversial. Some say those are harmful and some say those are not.

Feta Cheese

Feta cheese and any other unpasteurized cheese are unfavorable to the body during maternity. Those foods can cause a food borne illness called Listeriosis. If you are not pregnant, it will cause simple flu without damaging your health. But when pregnant, Listeriosis can cause serious difficulties like miscarriage and premature labor.

King Mackerel

King Mackerel is a rich source of Omega-3, but it has very high level of mercury included. Mercury can damage the growth of the baby’s nervous system. So, it is suggested to avoid King Mackerel during pregnancy. Since Omega-3 is necessary for mothers; you can try other alternate sources like salmon, tilapia, and shrimp but in a limited amount.

Tea/ Caffeinated Coffee

According to many doctors, caffeine can cross the placenta and affect the heart rate of the baby. Although according to some other doctors, 200mg of caffeine every day is safe. Caffeine can found not only in tea or coffee but also in chocolate, soft drinks, energy drinks and so on.

As there is a different opinion regarding this issue, I guess you should completely avoid it to keep your baby safe. If you can’t leave it entirely, you can drink but not more than 200mg and not on a regular basis.

Brie Cheese

Brie Cheese is yet another unpasteurized cheese that poses the threat of Listeria. Even a mild infection of Listeria can cause severe illness like miscarriage and still birth. So, this form of cheese, along with any other manner which says “unpasteurized” on the label, should be avoided altogether. However, those cheeses are not safe for pregnant women even if those are pasteurized.

Deli Meats

Deli meat is a common form of meat for lunch. Straightforwardly, meets in sandwiches, cold cuts, or sliced meats are commonly known as deli meats which have a negative association with pregnancy. Those foods can increase the risk of foodborne viral diseases. Even those foods can also cause severe Listeriosis. However, the chance of getting Listeria from deli meats is meager. But as it is your pregnancy time, safety is the first thing you should consider.


Liver, along with all other liver products such as liver pate, liver sausage should be avoided completely during maternity. Liver contains a very high amount of vitamin A which is congenital disabilities in babies. That’s why it is wiser to stay away from Liver and Liver-related food during your pregnancy time.

Unpasteurized Milk

Drinking unpasteurized milk during pregnancy can harm you and your baby. Raw milk contains dangerous pathogens like Listeria and Salmonella. It can make you sick and even cause serious pregnancy complications such as miscarriage and stillbirth. Before, drinking milk, boil it thoroughly. Avoid raw meats and foods that are made from raw milk with soft goats’ cheese and so on.

Uncooked Eggs

Many people prefer adding raw eggs to their smoothies for extra protein. This is something that a pregnant woman should evade taking altogether. Uncooked eggs have a high risk of containing the virus Salmonella. This can result in dehydration and early labor.


Swordfish holds a very high amount of mercury. I already told you about the negative effect of mercury. The high amount of mercury can damage the nervous system of the baby. It should also be avoided during pregnancy. However, fishes contain a vital amount of nutrients.

That’s why fishes should be on the diet list of to be a mother. But before eating any sea fishes or fishes know the amount of mercury it contains.

Nitrate-Rich Foods

As we all know, food that contains chemical is always harmful to health. Chemically processed foods like sausages, bacon, diet soda, etc. are referred as nitrate rich foods. Due to their low nutritional value and high nitrate content, these foods can result in fetal abnormalities and slow development of the baby. Those are harmful even at the regular time. How can you think of eating those during pregnancy?

It is imperative that you eat the healthy food during pregnancy. So make sure that you get all the necessary nutrients for your body in the right amount. Avoid the ones mentioned above.
